Township to Provide Sandbags for Residents as Shoreline Water Levels Rise
April 29, 2019 (Odessa, Ontario) – The Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority (CRCA) has advised municipalities and the public that the Surface Water Monitoring Centre of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has issued a Provincial Flood Watch Statement, on April 26, 2019.
The Provincial Flood Watch Statement provides advanced notice of high-water levels on Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River. Heightened risks may start to develop if water levels were to rise above 75.30 masl (metres above sea level), including potential shoreline flooding, beach submersion, crawl space and septic system inundation, and wave-driven erosion.
The municipality will be providing sand and sandbags for Loyalist Township residents. Residents can fill sandbags at the sand dome at the Public Works Garage, 748 County Road 6, Odessa; and the small sand dome at the back of the Amherst Island Roads Garage at 955 Stella Forty-Foot Road. At each of these facilities, residents will find a pile of sand and a limited supply of bags. Residents are advised that shovels are not provided at either of these sites. Bring your own shovel to ensure safe and effective packing of sandbags.
