Wind Turbine-Related Ice Issues
On the evening of February 7, 2019, at approximately 9:30 p.m. Loyalist Township night patrol staff on Amherst Island became aware that ice was falling onto Stella Forty-Foot Road from Turbine S37, located at 3045 Stella Forty-Foot Road. The Public Works Manager contacted Windlectric, who acted quickly to remotely deactivate the turbine, stopping it from turning. Once the turbine had stopped, no more ice was observed to fall onto the roadway.
Pedestrians and motorists who use Stella Forty-Foot Road are asked to be particularly alert to this potential hazard during future ice events.
The Township will be posting signage in the area warning of the potential for falling ice.
Windlectric has advised the Township that in the event of future turbine ice build-up events, they will stop Turbine S37 as a matter of protocol. Township staff will monitor this situation.
Township staff are unaware of ice-related safety hazards to travelled roadways from any of the other turbines.
