Clayton was first elected to Council in November, 1988 and has served in the following Council offices:

• 10 years as a Councillor with the former Ernestown Township;
• 2 years as Deputy Reeve with Loyalist Township Council;
• 10 years as Reeve for Loyalist Township.

Clayton has also served as a Lennox and Addington County Councillor for 8 years, with 4 of those years as Warden for the County.

Clayton currently serves as ex officio on all Township Committees and currently serves on the following Lennox and Addington County Committees: Social Services, Economic Development and the Emergency Services Advisory Committee.

He has lived in Amherstview with his wife, Harlene for approximately 40 years. They have 3 adult children; 2 reside in Amherstview and 1 in Oshawa. Clayton and Harlene are proud grandparents of five grandchildren.

Clayton has been retired for 11 years, has been active coaching minor sports for over twenty-five years and, played both hockey and ball in Amherstview.
