Winter Care for Water Meters

If you are planning to be away during the winter for any length of time and leaving your home without heat, following this procedure will help avoid damage to your water meter and inside plumbing:

As per Township Bylaw 2011-099, "The Water Works By-law", a property owner is liable for the safety and care of the water meter and all other service equipment placed on their property, and will be charged for all damages caused by frost and for the loss of the meter when removed from the premises whether stolen or otherwise. The cost of replacement and installation of a new meter is the responsibility of the homeowner.

Homeowners are also reminded that the water service from the property line to the house and all inside plumbing remains their responsibility. Should your pipes freeze during the winter, you will be instructed by staff to contact a plumber.

Please contact the Utilities Clerk at Ext. 105 to schedule an appointment to turn your water service off or on. A minimum of two working days' notice is required for all appointments.
