Who's at the Door? Sales of Water Systems
Did you know? As of March 1, 2018, the Province of Ontario made it illegal to sell certain household appliances door-to-door, unless you have initiated the transaction. This includes water heaters, water softeners, and other treatment systems. Consumer Protection Ontario, an awareness program from Ontario's Ministry of Government and Consumer Services, has a wealth of information for consumers regarding door to door sales and home service contracts.
From time to time, Loyalist Township receives calls from residents who have been approached at home by individuals, sometimes employing aggressive tactics, who may purport to represent Loyalist Township, or to be visiting their home on our behalf.
They may also use scare tactics, such as suggesting that a property's equipment does not meet safety regulations or that municipally-treated water does not meet quality standards.
The Township's Utilities staff do not do interior inspections of private water pipes (residential or commercial), except when an appointment has been made at the request of the customer. These are never done after regular business hours; except in the case of an emergency, which would be initiated by the customer.
We do not sell water filtration systems, nor do we employ a company to do so on our behalf. To learn more about Loyalist's drinking water quality management system and the safety of our water, please visit our Water Quality page.
If you are approached by anyone identifying themselves as Loyalist Township staff, always ask to see their Township-issued photo ID badge or a business card. If you have any concerns about their identity, do not allow them into your home and do not sign anything. Please call the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122, or during business hours, report the incident to Loyalist Township at 613-386-7351, ext. 116.
